Student employment can provide benefits far beyond the paycheck
Students who work during their academic careers often
learn valuable communication, leadership and business skills that
prepare them for future careers after graduation. To make the most of
these opportunities, job seekers should be aware of potential employers'
expectations, both during the interview process and while on the job.
The Anatomy of a Job Search
Most job hunters have minimal success with getting interviews from
newspaper or employment magazine help-wanted ads. You probably heard of
people who answered dozens of ads each week and NEVER received a call
from a company.
Thinking of a Career in Software Development?
First and foremost, love programming. You also need to know how to
communicate and relate to other people, because a big chunk of the
average programmer's time is spent relating to people - your boss, other

Effective Cover Letters and Résumés
5 Cover Letter Types That Can Help You Get Interviews

There are five types of cover letters used during the job
search process: application letters (serve as an
introduction to your resume), prospecting letters (an
inquiry about possible vacancies or a request for an
informational interview), thank you letters (a follow-up to
an interview), acceptance letters (to accept a job offer),
or rejection letters (used to thank an employer for a job
offer, but to reject it).
Many job seekers concentrate their
efforts on developing a resume, but dedicate little time to
writing effective letters. While a resume is important, a
letter is an opportunity to further market your
qualifications.

.NET Software Development Best Practices by Steve
McConnell
Software development is largely about managing complexity,
and comprehensive project design plays a critical role in
the success of medium and large projects.
"A certain amount of software complexity is inherent in the
problems we try to solve, but a large part depends as much
on the nature of the solution as the problem. The best
solutions are those created by people who realize just how
small their skulls are and tailor their solutions
accordingly".

Rational Unified Process (RUP)
The Rational Unified Process is an iterative software
development process framework created by the Rational
Software Corporation, since 2002 a division of IBM.
The RUP is not a single concrete prescriptive process, but
rather an adaptable process framework, intended to be
tailored by the development organizations and software
project teams that will select the elements of the process
that are appropriate for their needs.
The Rational Unified Process (RUP) is also a software
process product, originally developed by Rational Software,
and now available from IBM. The product includes a
hyperlinked knowledge base with sample artifacts and
detailed descriptions for many different types of
activities. RUP is included in the IBM Rational Method
Composer (RMC) product which allows customization of the
process.
With the commercial success of the RUP product, a generic,
non-proprietary version of the process was created, the
Unified Process, leading to competing refinements of
process and product.
